RIFT VALLEY

KENYA

Budget : Luxury Safari*

“ BLENDS OF COLOR"

Magadi & Natron Lakes

In the heart of the Great Rift Valley, beyond the lunar volcanic landscape surrounding the soda lakes of Magadi and Natron, lie wild spaces still untouched by mass tourism. This region is at the heart of the Masai lands, where wildlife coexists in harmony with herds.

The main attraction of this location lies in its aridity and the presence of photographic hides located near watering holes. During the dry season, animals gather around these points to drink, day and night. These hides are ideally positioned at water level to obtain spectacular images. They are also equipped with spotlights, controllable from the interior, allowing the scene to be illuminated with front, side, or rear light. These " hides " thus offer intimate and incredible observations of birds and animals at ground level.

The hides are completely independent and have toilets and beds for overnight stays. Depending on the lodge, you may have dinner at your camp before spending the night, or arrive at the waterhole in the afternoon and stay there until the following morning. In this case, food and drinks will be provided. By being sunk into the ground at the edge of the waterholes, you will be at eye level with the animals, allowing you to take unique wildlife photographs and observe wildlife in its natural environment.

The biodiversity of the region is exceptional , and rare species such as striped hyenas, leopards, porcupines and the very discreet caracal may come to drink. Depending on the environment, you may also observe numerous species of herbivores such as giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, as well as baboons and striped mongooses. At night, some more stealthy animals frequent the watering holes, such as genets, civets, black-backed jackals and white-tailed mongooses.

Lodges in this region also offer helicopter flights over Lakes Magadi and Natron : a unique experience, offering exceptional photographic opportunities. During these flights, the focus is on the abstract patterns and flocks of flamingos found on both lakes. The colors and textures are spectacular and vary daily depending on the wind, humidity, and season.

Dry season

February, March / August to Early November

Although this is an arid region, it's essential to choose the optimum time to observe the animals coming to drink. The higher the temperatures and the drier the environment, the better the observations. Animals gather around the last watering holes, offering exceptional photographic opportunities, especially for rare or usually discreet species.

A seasonal destination for extraordinary photos

Over the past few years of safari, I've been fortunate enough to visit this place several times. Each new experience here is unique, and the images captured are truly extraordinary. On the plains, you'll have the opportunity to play with the dust at sunrise and sunset, creating spectacular atmospheres for your photos.

Of all the photo caches I've experienced in Africa, these are by far the richest and offer the greatest potential for creative images. Not to mention, of course, the helicopter tours, which reveal unique and unparalleled perspectives on the continent.

A perfect destination for capturing rare and creative animal images!
